Overview

A chess analysis app for iPhone, iPad and Mac

For iPhone, iPad and Mac. No account.

ChessWOW turns a picture of a chess position into a board you can work with, and then gives you a full engine to study it. Stockfish 19 runs on your device, so analysis works on a train, on a plane or in a club hall with bad reception. This page lists what the app does and links to a detailed guide for each part.

Scan a position from a picture

Point the camera at a screen, pick a screenshot or photograph a diagram in a book. ChessWOW finds the board, places the pieces and asks you to confirm whose move it is. Squares the recognition is unsure about are marked, and you fix any piece with a tap. Recognition runs on the device; the image is not uploaded.

Analyze with Stockfish on your device

Once a position is on the board, Stockfish 19 starts calculating. You see an evaluation bar, the best move as an arrow and up to three candidate lines. Move a piece and the engine recalculates the new position. The guide on the offline Stockfish app explains how to read the numbers, what "+1.2" means and why depth matters.

Review your own games

Import your recent games from Chess.com or Lichess by username, or open any PGN file. For each game ChessWOW builds a report: accuracy for both sides, a graph of the evaluation over the game and the critical moments described in plain words. You can replay each critical moment and try to find the better move yourself.

Play and practice

Play Stockfish at five levels, from a beginner setting that makes deliberate mistakes up to full strength. Hints, takebacks and a blunder warning help while you learn, and you can switch the warning off when you want a real test. Two people can play on one iPhone, iPad or Mac with a chess clock, and the app turns the pieces and clock for the player across the table. Endgame tablebases let Stockfish play and judge positions with few pieces exactly.

How the parts fit together

A typical routine looks like this. After an online game, import it and read the report while the game is still fresh. Practise the two or three critical moments until you find the right move without help. When a book exercise or a puzzle from a friend catches your eye, scan it, solve it on your own and then compare with the engine. Once a week, pick an endgame you keep getting wrong, set it up and play it against Stockfish until you win it reliably. Each part works on its own; together they cover the full circle from playing to understanding.
